Study Reveals Surprising Dog Parenting Trends
Welcome all dog lovers! Today’s topic was brought to our attention via one of our listeners. Thanks to Erika Beerbower for the heads up about the survey!
My guest today is Adrian Tennant, Vice President of Insights at Bigeye, an advertising agency based in Orlando, Florida. Adrian is originally from the UK and has worked in advertising for almost three decades. He leads Bigeye's research team, which recently published the 2019 US Pet Industry Study, providing a snapshot of pet owners' purchasing behaviors and attitudes about pet-related products and services. Adrian is also pet parent: he has two four-year-old Maine Coon cats who both think they're dogs!
Today Adrian is going to share with us the results obtained from their recent 2019 US Pet Industry Study, which gives us insights into the buying habits and attitudes of owners of domestic pets. Of course, that includes all of us that have dogs.
They collected the data for this primary research in July and August of 2019 from a sample of 784 adults aged 25 to 55 located across the United States.
We’ll start off by saying that 75% of respondents in the study owned dogs. Yay dog owners!
Adrian, can you share with us why your agency conducted the study.
Ninety-five percent of owners consider pets a member of their family; how do you think that influences our buying behaviors when shopping for our dogs?
Adrian, what are we purchasing for our dogs?
And where are dog owners shown to shop?
And what about services? What are the stats on services purchased for our dogs?
What did you find out about owners and subscription services?
I found this stat to be surprising: one-third of all pet owners (36%) at least sometimes purchase costumes for their pets. Which demographic falls into this majority?
Let’s talk about your findings as they relate to CBD products.
Adrian, how do owners decide what to feed their dogs?
What is the average spend on our dogs?
Were there any surprises in the results?
