My Eyes Have a Cold Nose
Hello dog lovers! We are in for a real treat! With us is Gail Hamilton who is a powerful, inspirational and entertaining national speaker, author, performer, and facilitator, who is totally blind. She has sung in two operas, assisted in the building of her former Habitat for Humanity home, was crowned Ms. Colorado Senior America, and published her memoire, “Soaring into Greatness.” Gail has owned five Seeing Eye dogs and believes that if we change the way we see, we will change the way we live.
Gail, have you been blind your whole life?
Gail, you’ve had 5 seeing eye dogs and are awaiting your next one, right?
Can you tell us about your dogs and how they impacted your life?
What does it take, specifically the training involved for a seeing eye dog?
What are the main everyday functions that your dogs assist you with?
How do people get matched with a dog? Can you walk us through the process?
What is the usual time to wait for a dog and is there usually a waiting list?
What is the average time that a dog can work as a seeing eye dog? And what happens to them once they retire?
When we spoke before, you told me about an awful story about what happened one day when you were out walking with your dog. Can you share that with our listeners?
Do all guide dogs wear a vest? Should that be our first clue?
And you have a whole talk on lessons learned from man’s best friend. Can you maybe give us a summary of those lessons or the top 3?
